XMB is free and vBulletin is not. and as always you get more functionality in something that you pay for.
Besides that the major visible differences I found were:
items -------------- vBulletin ----------------- XMB
^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^
-Messaga Icon ------- 14 ----------------------- 12
-Smileys --------------- 11 ----------------------- 8
-auto URL parse ----- Yes --------------------- No
-email notification --- Yes --------------------- Yes
-file attachment ----- Yes -------------------- No
-active users list ----- Yes -------------------- Yes
-Private messaging -- Yes ------------------- Yes(U2U)
-Preview Posts
whe replying --------- Yes -------------------- Yes
About the backend process, xmb is pretty easy to setup. It creates all it's database tables by itself. stability and other stuff, seem promising but again I haven't used it extensivly. I don't know anything about vB's backend process, may be reuben or someone else can tell you about that.
Well if i missed anything or you need anything specific, I've xmb installed at http://www.al-iqbal.org/forum/ , you can check that out.
P.S. please don't laugh at my lousy table.

actually v-bulletin is a very good format mainly becuase its not a beta like xmb.I currently use both forum boards, but v-bulletin is by far the best that i have used. The thing i do like about xmb is that its a free board unlike v-bulletin which u have to pay 85 dollars for a 1yr license..Kinda high priced for a forum board,or u can spend over 100 dollars for a permnant license, which in my opinion is still too high.So using xmb in its beta form is still good and offers almost as many options as v-bulletin but cost u nuthin.Dunno if this will help u any but free is free.
