Is anyone here familiar with configuring Matt Wright's Guestbook plug-ins? The basic/ raw bone version is seen all over the place, but we have yet to find any posted version that indicates any upgrades. Matt himself offers absolutely no support or guidance. He's sold his book and seems to have left the premises....

We have a copy of his "cook book" and the accompanying CD that includes all the plug-ins and various scripts. Unfortunately, not being technically oriented, it has been impossible for us to figure out how to add them to the bare-bone script.

With all of the harassment by spammers who have been posting what can only be described as grotesque entries that we literally have been deleting by hand, our greatest urgency right now is to add the administrator's .cgi and other files that would allow us to approve/reject new entries.

During a recent research on the net for help, I have seen mention that the spammers are also scanning guestbooks for email addresses of legitimate writers. Is this something else that we can moderate?

Anyone? We are getting quite desperate on this problem....

Thanks,

Marisa

Much of Matt Wright's stuff is dated and may have some vulnerabilities unless latest patches are applied if avaialble - As you are with 100Megs then why not use phpBB & Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1 available as install at cpanel. Then add image verification to GB to stop spammers - available from GB support forum member Carbonize .

Where is the Guestbook support forum to which you are referring? We had not tried the 100 Megs guestbook because we have been using the same script for over 6 years when it was set up for us by someone who was more knowledgeable. Unfortunately, when we lost him and then went from a Windows to a Unix-based host, something was lost in the process. The person who helped us make the transfer also wiped out some of the Matt Wright script that we consider vital today. It is only in the last year or so that the spammers seemed to discover us.

If I could see a few examples of the 100 Megs Advanced Guestbook 2.3.1 for comparison to ours, I could make a more intelligent appraisal. Ours has a very specific "look" and simplicity which we need because we have entries from people all over the world and in a variety of different languages. Would you please have a look at our disabled Guestbook at http://istrianet.org/feedback/index.html and continue this dialog with me? We are really desperate to install the administrator functions that would permit us to filter out unwanted entries. I would be happy just to add that feature to our present Guestbook setup.

Thanks.

Marisa

We are testing the 100 Megs Advanced Guestbook. It is full of wing-dings and fancy happenings, but it appears to be missing all the basic features that we know exist with the advance Matt Wright guestbook that we need and want - the most important is the administrator's approval of entries before they go through!

We are still investigation the myriad of configuration options, so the final verdict isn't in yet. However, this does not seem to be a good alternative for us for all the reasons I previously stated.

Also, we have not been able to decipher what is and where is the "imagine verification" option.

Any other suggestions?

Hi

If your looking for tech support, ask in the tech section OR you can open a ticket with us.

The advance guestbook is not provided by us, it is bundled in with Cpanel itself. If you need support however please open a support ticket with us at http://support.100megswebhosting.com
